Interview with Theatre Artist Michelle Nicole Matlock

January 21, 2015 by Steven Sparling 1 Comment

Theatre Artist Michelle Nicole MatlockIt’s a real pleasure for me to introduce you to Michelle Nicole Matlock.

Michelle is an actor and theatre artist that I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with through the internet. Michelle is currently touring with Cirque du Soleil in a role that she created in one of their ground breaking shows; but she also has a long history as a creative entrepreneur – creating, producing and performing her own work all across the United States and around the world. Michelle is also a coach for creative entrepreneurs. You can learn more about Michelle here.

As you’ll see in this video we had a long and winding discussion about the state of the theatre maker, her own journey, and the differences between creating & producing your own work (what I would call the creative entrepreneur model) and working for big companies like Cirque du Soleil (what I call the creative intrapreneur model).

Technical Mixup

[One technical confession, I obviously pushed a wrong button because you can’t see my face! That wasn’t deliberate! I’m as much of a camera-seeking whore as any other theatre artist. I just hit the button which told Google Hangouts to lock the camera on Michelle by mistake instead of allowing the camera to alternate based on who was speaking. So you’ll hear my voice but not see my face. ]

Many thanks to Michelle for speaking to The Thriving Creative Community.

Michelle is amazing! Known her since she was in the 7th grade which she attended with my son, her good friend throughout college. She is very down to earth, extremely talented, inspiring, creative and imaginative! Michelle is a very hard, disciplined actor with unlimited talent. This girl was born creative with a special gift!
