Internet Truffles – Week One

Internet Truffles

We’re trying something new this week. Not sure about you, but I’m getting overwhelmed with things to read online. But I’m not prepared to ignore it all because I know there is really good stuff out there. HOWEVER, it takes a lot of weeding to get through the dross and find the good stuff.

Hence my pledge to you:

I am going to be your truffle snorting pig!

Yes, I will nose my way through the forest to find you the very best of what’s out there. Or at least the stuff that makes me stop and think, or puts a smile on my face, or that I think might bring you some new insight or a fresh way of working on your creative business.

We artists need to stick together. And I want you to know I’ve got your back.

Starting with finding you the very best on a weekly basis.

So here goes. My first list.

I hope you like it. Let me know your thoughts.

Steven

1. Not sure whether to stay on your current path?

A compelling piece about the commitment required to achieve anything in life. When it feels like you’re crazy, or selling your soul to the devil, read this and see WHY you need to complete the transaction. What to do when you find yourself at the crossroads. Inspiring and harrowing in equal measures.

2. Are you on Medium? You should be…here’s 6 reasons why

I’m just getting to know Medium, a really beautiful looking site aimed at people who think and write (and like nice pictures). I’m still working out how I’ll use it but feel drawn to it like a moth to flame. It might be right for you. Here’s a rundown on 6 ways that authors (or anyone who writes) can use Medium.

3. Concerned that the world is being filled with shlock art? Don’t be. It doesn’t last.

With the release of the 50 Shades of Grey film here in the UK there has been lots of rehashing of how awful the books are (I haven’t read them, so I’m going on common consensus), but also a dismay at how many copies they sold. Here’s a great, short piece about why we shouldn’t be concerned about fad authors (Dan Brown anyone?) and why quality stands the test of time.

4. Are you a solopreneur? Don’t know what that is?

Here’s a good analysis of what being a solopreneur is (one of the trendy new terms for people who are self employed) and some ways to make it work for you. For more from Debs, check out her blog Catching Fireworks

5. Are you letting yourself down visually?

A step by step guide to creating a style guide for your blog. With every year our expectations of visual styling on websites, blogs, and posts increases. Tools like Canva or PicMonkey make hardcore visual manipulation tools freely available to you. As a result though readers are expecting your materials to look GOOD. One of the hardest things is forcing yourself to make decision on the colours, fonts, images you will use. This post will walk you through making those decisions. A bit of time invested on your visual style will be well worth it (I’ve got this flagged up to do myself…. watch this space).

6. Want to shed some winter weight? Spring is coming…

Life is short. You shouldn’t eat food that comes out of cardboard boxes or foam trays. Chances are you might have put on some ‘comfort weight’ over the winter months and might be wondering if your physique is ready for spring. Because feeling like there’s some room in your trousers is never a bad thing (I’ve lost 12 pounds since August and have to say my clothes are fitting a whole lot better). In the last week I’ve been using My Fitness Pal on my iPhone to track my food and I’ve lost 2.5 lbs in a week. It’s free. I recommend it. Here’s 10 easy, delicious looking casseroles at under 400 calories. Plus who doesn’t love the whole idea of a casserole? My mother did the whole casserole thing in the 80’s and it brings back warm memories. Retro food rocks!
