Honest insight about auditions, why you need focus, and the merits of Snapchat – Internet Truffles Week 9

Internet Truffles Week 9
Hello! I’m off to Canada this week to celebrate my mom’s 75th birthday. On the way, I’m stopping off for 3 days in Iceland so by the time you read this I might be soaking here:

SO, without further ado, here’s my pick of the best of the internet for this week:

1. Ever wondered why your weren’t called in for an audition? Harsh truth….

Ouch. I really really appreciate getting the honest truth. I really do. But even this one surprises me. I knew the performing arts was ruthless, and the selection process draconian, but this is harsh. If you’ve ever wondered why you weren’t called in for something you’re PERFECT for, this will shed new light.

2. One freelancer willing to peel back the curtains on her earnings.

If there’s something I love even more than honesty, it’s transparency. I love people who are brave enough to let it all hang out. And it doesn’t get much braver than blogging week by week how much you earn (or don’t earn) as a freelance writer and musician.

3. Focus dear creative, focus…

I’m a scanner, someone with a wide variety of interests and things that take my fancy (bright shiny object…). However, as an entrepreneur I understand the need to focus on one thing at a time. This piece argues (very well) for the need to do one thing until you get it really really really good, so that everyone desires it, and then you branch out into other things. It’s a compelling argument.

4. See London as Shakespeare did

This is very cool. Shakespeare’s plays and poetry are filled with references to my adopted city – London. But if you’re not a born and bred Londoner (and even if you are) it’s sometimes hard to know what old William was referring to. So you need this – an interactive map of Shakespeare’s London.

5. Snap snap, get on Snapchat

Gotta say this one makes me kinda anxious. The thing with social media is that the people who get in there early on and establish themselves do much better than people who are late to the party. I was an early adopter of Pinterest and have a big following. I was a late adopter of Instagram and have a small following. Now, apparently, Snapchat is the new Instagram. Is it time to get on board? It sounds interesting and a chance for artists and creatives to share their personalities. The thing with all of these platforms, I think, is to test it. Play with it a bit. See if it works for you. Then decide if you’ll build it in or not.
