July Retrospective: Back in July 2014, I wrote a daily series exploring the realities of navigating the creative economy. Twelve years later, looking back at these entries (and my original awful hand-drawn illustrations!), I’m struck by how the core truths of a creative career remain completely timeless. Each day this month, I’m opening up the archive to share these foundational lessons—with a few modern reflections layered in.
If you’re a new creative graduate looking to find your footing in the creative economy, a Gen X looking to pivot into a creative business, a side-hustler or someone who just wants to up their creative business game, there’s something for you in this series. Just don’t judge my drawings 😉
Welcome! I’m glad you’ve decided to take up the July challenge.
It’s so easy as creative people to coast along, to do what we’ve always done, and hope for different results. So I applaud your willingness to take the next month to shake up your creative business, put a bit of thought into its planning, and map out a better way forward.
There’s that terrible cliché about how ‘those who fail to plan, plan to fail.’ And yet like most terrible clichés there is an element of truth to it.
Investing some time over the next month planning your creative business will pay dividends in the months and years ahead. Having a clear sense of direction for your creative business can help to avoid the flounder that so many creative people experience.
And when you’ve got a solid plan, when you know what you need to do and schedule the time to make it happen, you will be so much happier and able to enjoy your creative business, instead of feeling like your creativity and your urge to be creative is a burden on your life.
What can you expect over the coming month?
In the first week we are going to look at your product or products – what it exactly is that you offering for sale. We’ll get clearer on how your product fits into the marketplace, helping you to come to terms with competition. We’ll also look at how to structure your product into an offering, or range of offers, and how to better describe them so people will want to buy them.
The second week is going to be all about your customer. Understanding who the target customer is for your product. We’ll learn how to understand your customer better and how to speak to their needs, which will result in easier selling.
The third week looks specifically at the art of selling. How do you engage with the audience, market to them, get them to remember you and ultimately buy from you?
In the final week we’ll look at structuring and running a creative business. Managing your money, coming up with a business plan, building a team and managing multiple career threads.
Our slogan here at the Thriving Creative is where business & creativity collide. We’re going to be spending the next month examining that space where your business and your creativity collide. Two opposing forces collide and create sparks – those sparks are your creative career! Let’s learn how to manage them effectively.
I promise each daily bite will be both short and actionable.
