6. Follow the leaders in your field

February 6, 2012 by Steven Sparling Leave a Comment

In your quest to keep your ear to the ground, you should be following all of the leaders in your field on social media. Set up bookmarks for their blogs, follow them on Twitter, or follow their fan pages on Facebook. You may decide you want to try and connect with them directly on LinkedIn, or simply join groups that they belong to and follow their posts.
Following the movers and shakers in our industry helps to identify trends, be ‘in the know’and to feel connected to the top of our field. We can also learn valuable lessons by tracing the thread of their career success to see what we can emulate.
At the same time, the most useful social networking you are going to do is with people who are on the same rung of the career ladder as you, plus those one to two rungs ahead of you. This is where your next opportunities are most likely to come from, so be sure you are pursuing your target contact lists.
